Thanks for Two Million Likes!

09.30.15 - Jeff Skal

Claptrap wants to personally thank our Facebook community for helping the Borderlands page reach TWO MILLION LIKES! That’s like, almost a bazillion.

That's A Lot of Battleborn!

09.29.15 - Jeff Skal

There's a lot of different ways to play Battleborn. And we're not just talking about the cooperative Story Mode and three competitive multiplayer modes. With 25 playable heroes that can be customized each match, we figured that number would be pretty huge -- and it turns out we couldn't even capture the depth of Battleborn in one infographic. But that didn't stop us from trying!

49.6 billion is a pretty big number. Let us help you put that into perspective:

  • Battleborn has 49,576,665,600 different hero and team configurations. You’ve got 7,367,013,205 neighbors here on Earth (and counting) – according to Doing some simple division, it means that everyone on the planet, and then some, could jump into a 5-player co-op game of Battleborn at the same time and each team could have a totally different experience. Think about it. If you’re playing those odds, you’ve got at least 7 billion potential Internet buddies….aaaand unfortunately a couple thousand Internet trolls. Statistically speaking.
  • There are 1024 ways for you to play each base-level hero. You could pick five different variants of a Battleborn hero and ship them to every country on Earth (196) and still have enough alternate versions left to fill the roster of more than three full basketball teams. Nobody tell the NBA about Benedict’s vertical leap, OK?
  • There are 25 playable heroes in Battleborn. That’s more than SIX times the number of playable characters that shipped with Borderlands, Borderlands 2, or Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Hell, that’s more than all three Borderlands titles combined.
  • For every fully-ranked Battleborn hero, there are 7,776 different ways you could play (that level progression loadout can change every single time you play). So, if you had a single 30-minute game session for each way to play, you would need to be Battleborn-ing for 162 days straight to see every permutation of just one character.  You ask us, that’s a pretty awesome way to spend several months of your life.
  • FUN NUMBER FACT: 111111111 x 111111111 = 12345678987654321. Because math. (Our resident math wizard threw this one in to make sure that you were still paying attention.)

Battleborn: Rendain Trailer

09.24.15 - Jeff Skal

Lothar Rendain, the Lord Commander of the Jennerit Imperium, has a message for you.

Pre-order Battleborn and receive the "Firstborn Pack" bonus pack -- a set of golden skins for playable heroes Thorn, Reyna, Montana, Marquis and Rath -- when Battleborn releases on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 9, 2016.

Battleborn's Creative Director Randy Varnell sat down with GameSpot to talk about Lothar Rendain, the game's villain.

"Good villains are really important to us here. Part of making a good villain is to be sure they have motivations for what they do. We like to avoid what we call “mustache-twirling" that is, evil for the sake of just being evil. That’s how you get cartoon villains. But I think the great villains are a bit more complex. Complex, though, is sometimes hard to get across in a fast-moving action game, so Rendain and the Varelsi are both important parts of our conflict."

Hop over to the GameSpot article to learn more about Rendain and what makes him tick.

Borderlands 2 turns the big oh-three today! Celebrate by taking a ride with us on the time-traveling hype train to rewatch some of the trailers leading up to that momentous day, September 18, 2012.

A Little Friday Magic

09.11.15 - Jeff Skal

Spice up your Friday with a little bit of magic and watch Randy Pitchford take on IGN's resident magician, Richard Bearpark, in a sleight of hand showdown at Gamescom 2015!

Remember the functional Bandit Technical that we had made for the Borderlands 2 Live Action trailer? It has found a fitting new home with Paul C. Miller and Michael Orr at Weekend Wasteland!

The vehicle was originally created for the commercial by Hollywood vehicle coordinator and creator, Dennis McCarthy. Paul and Michael bought the vehicle, fixed it up, loaded it with cosplayers and had one of the most popular vehicles at Weekend Wasteland. Nice work, guys!

Gearbox Community Roundup - 9/4/2015

09.04.15 - Gearbox Staff

Love is in the air in this week's Community Roundup! We're featuring a couple of Community Badasses, exploring an expertly crafted marriage proposal and taking a peep at some Borderlands ink! Dive on in after the jump.

Taunts are important in the world of Battleborn. What better way is there to celebrate a hard-fought victory than by doing a set of one-handed push-ups next to the body of a recently defeated foe? (We're looking at you, Oscar Mike!)

We're already working on all kinds of awesome taunts for the game and want to give you the chance to influence our next taunt! That's why we're going to create an in-game taunt based on the winning submission of the #IAmBattleborn Taunt Contest

This is your chance to have your taunt included in Battleborn and used as a victory celebration by millions of players around the world. Got a killer taunt idea? Here's how to enter:

Step 1: Create a video of your character taunt. You can pick any of the revealed Battleborn characters including the four newly announced badasses – MellkaAmbraBenedict and Reyna! Act it out on camera and make sure the shot doesn’t feature other people – you’re the star!

Step 2: Upload the video to YouTube (no longer than 30 sec), Vine or Instagram. At the beginning of the video, make sure to clearly indicate what character the taunt is for (show a sign to camera or shout the character’s name out loud).

Step 3: (Option 1 – Twitter) Post your video in a tweet to @Battleborn and make sure to include #IAmBattleborn #Contest in your tweet

Example : Hey @Battleborn, check out my badass entry to the #IAmBattleborn #contest <link to video>

(Option 2 – Facebook) Post your video as a response to the post announcing the competition

The #IAmBattleborn Taunt Contest is open now through September 10, 2015, so act fast! Click here for official contest rules.

As we prepare for the release of Battleborn on February 9, 2016, the teams at Gearbox Software and 2K will be testing various aspects of the game and online infrastructure in an ever-expanding series of closed technical tests.

Santa Monica, CA, and New York, NY, August 28, 2015 – Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), a premier next generation global content leader, is teaming with the publisher and creators of Borderlands®, and renowned producers Avi and Ari Arad to adapt Gearbox Software’s critically-acclaimed blockbuster video game Borderlands into a tent-pole feature film, the parties announced today.  Borderlands is an action role-playing first-person shooter video game created and developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, a wholly owned label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. The award-winning Borderlands franchise has been lauded by critics and over the years has built a passionate global fan base, shipping more than 26 million copies around the world since its launch in 2009, including 8 million copies shipped during Take Two’s fiscal year 2015 alone. Set in the frontier of a sci-fi universe, Borderlands is best known for Gearbox’s blending of irreverent humor and characters, with a unique comic-book art style, and co-operative four-player genre-bending, loot-grabbing gameplay. It’s a franchise that in the last six years has ushered in a new and popular category of first-person shooters.
The Borderlands film creative team will be led by producers Avi and Ari Arad, who are responsible for some of the most successful motion picture and television franchises in history, including Iron ManSpider ManThe Amazing Spider ManX-MenGhost Rider and Blade.
“We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tent-pole for a global audience,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. “Part of our strategy in entering the game space under Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows.  The Borderlands games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”
“Our Borderlands franchise continues to grow in popularity, and we’ve assembled a team with the strengths needed to introduce this amazing cross-platform property to a whole new global audience,” said Take-Two Interactive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick. “Lionsgate has emerged as a major creative force in the global marketplace with an incredible portfolio of brands; our partners at Gearbox have pioneered and cultivated an iconic property; and Avi and Ari Arad are two of the most successful producers of action franchises. This alliance is ideally positioned to create a bold, provocative, no-holds-barred motion picture phenomenon that will delight Borderlands’ current legions of fans and captivate moviegoers around the world.”
“We’re thrilled to extend our partnership with Jon Feltheimer, Michael Burns, Rob, Patrick and the amazing team at Lionsgate and join forces with Take-Two and Gearbox on this incredible property,” said Avi and Ari Arad. “Borderlands has a unique story-driven narrative energy and rich multidimensional characters that position it to become a singular motion picture event.”
“Creating, developing and continuing to build the Borderlands franchise at Gearbox Software has been an incredible ride where the most powerful fuel to our engine has been the astonishing outpouring of love and devotion from the fans,” said Randy Pitchford, President and Co-Founder of Gearbox Software. “It is the passion of the fans driving the growing success of Borderlands that brought what I believe to be the best team of film producers, marketing and distribution experts in the world together to deliver the exciting story and unique characters of Borderlands to the big screen.”
The deal was orchestrated by a Lionsgate team led by President of Interactive Ventures & Games Peter Levin, Summit Entertainment President of Production Geoff Shaevitz and Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President of Business & Legal Affairs Patricia Laucella.

Gearbox Community Roundup - 8/26/2015

08.26.15 - Gearbox Staff

In this week's Community Roundup, we take a look at three new Gearbox Community Badasses and check out a beautiful piece of custom stained glass.

Community Badasses: Gogo Incognito, Mitsu Reiji, and EatThePath

Gearbox Community Badass is a new feature on our forums in which we recognize members of the community for the cool things they're doing. Anyone is eligible to be a Community Badass and over the past few weeks, and we've highlighted that by showcasing quite a diverse group of characters! Click the links to check out our features on Gogo Incognito (Cosplayer), Mitsu Reiji (Streamer), and EatThePath (Homeworld modder). If you'd like to nominate someone to be a Gearbox Community Badass, just contact Joe (JoeKGBX) on the forums!

Homeworld Stained Glass

One of the great things about the Gearbox community is all of the cool fan art art we get to see. Every piece is exciting and special in its own way, but every now and then, a piece pops up that is not only beautiful, but also functional! Reddit user StonedogTBSV recently shared a photo of a phenomenal Homeworld-themed stained glass that he created.

Stonedog a.k.a. Kenny Falconer told us that while he's new to the art of staining glass, he's a very experienced Homeworld player:

"I have only been making stained glass for a few months. I've always been an artist, and this was something I'd always wanted to get in to, but was a little daunted by the prospect." He added, "I have been playing Homeworld since 1999. I combined the two because the art design of the Homeworld series has been something I keep coming back to in my head. Even now, a good 15 or 16 years after I saw the first ships or artwork, I am still struck by how awesome they look. Nobody has ever managed to match it."

It’s that time of the year again -- the heat is starting to break, the leaves are thinking about what color they’d like to turn this fall, and a bunch of Gearboxers are heading to Seattle to hang with the community at PAX Prime!

We’ve got a lot in store for you this year with our partners at 2K and Telltale Games, including playable Battleborn game stations, a “Cospital” cosplay repair station, a Tales from the Borderlands Crowd Play event, and of course, the surprise-laden Inside Gearbox Software panel. You can find the full schedule below:

Note: these panels typically fill up, so arrive early!

This year’s panel will be hosted by two incredibly funny gentlemen of the Chainsawsuit: The Podcast, Kris Straub and Gearbox’s own Mikey Neumann!

We also think we can do something super rad if enough Battleborn cosplayers show up to the panel!

The Cospital – Friday, August 28 through Monday, August 31 – Outside Main Hall

We’re setting up a triage station built to handle almost any cosplay emergency! Whether you need a changing room, want to mend some stitching, or just an extra line of hot glue, stop by and take advantage of our complimentary cosplay supply closet right outside of the main show floor.
